Tweets fuel Tim Burton’s storytelling project

24 Nov 2010

Hollywood director and writer Tim Burton has recently launched his storytelling project called Cadavre Exquis that encourages people to contribute via the social networking website Twitter.

Translated as “exquisite corpse”, the storytelling experiment involves Twitter users contributing lines to a story that has been posted on the website and thereby creating a story from a single line starting point.

Burton, who is famed for his darkly comic films such as Beetlejuice, Alice in Wonderland and The Corpse Bride, has initiated the project by posting the line: “Stainboy, using his obvious expertise, was called in to investigate mysterious glowing goo on the gallery floor …”

Building the story

Burton’s tweet can now be continued by Twitter users as often as they wish but only the best tweets of the day will be chosen to build on the story in sequence.

This is not the first online storytelling interactive contest. In 2008, John Malkovich and Sony Vaio launched the Sony Vaio Online Script Project, where contributors were asked to make additions to the opening of a script posted online by Malkovich himself.
